How Does Invisalign Compare to At Home Aligners Like Byte and SmileDirectClub?

Reviewed by Dr. Ali Tameemi, DDS

At-home aligner brands like Byte and SmileDirectClub promise convenience, but they operate on fundamentally different clinical models than Invisalign. Understanding those differences — and what happens when DTC brands go under — can protect your teeth and your wallet.

"Smile Express" vs. Invisalign Express: Two Very Different Things

Patients searching for "Smile Express" online regularly land in a fog of confusion, and for good reason. These sound like competing products but they're not even the same type of thing.

Smile Express is a delivery model. It's a hybrid care program offered by the Smile Doctors orthodontic group that uses actual Invisalign aligners but reduces the number of required in-office visits through remote monitoring via the DentalMonitoring app. A licensed provider still oversees your case. You're still getting Invisalign hardware. You're just checking in differently.

Invisalign Express, by contrast, is a product tier — a clinical limit set by Align Technology. It caps treatment at five to ten aligner trays, making it appropriate only for minor relapse cases: a small gap that reopened after years without a retainer, or very slight crowding. Any provider can offer it. It's not a brand program.

So how do you choose? If you had braces or Invisalign years ago and just need a minor touch-up, Invisalign Express through a local provider is likely sufficient. If you want fewer office visits but your case requires meaningful tooth movement, a hybrid model like Smile Express — or simply working with a local Invisalign provider who uses remote monitoring — gives you clinical flexibility without sacrificing oversight. A good starting point is scheduling a cleaning and exam so your provider can assess your current oral health before any aligner treatment begins.

The key takeaway: never choose based on the word "express" alone. Ask your provider exactly how many trays your case requires and whether a limited-tray product is even appropriate for your situation.

What Happens When Your At-Home Aligner Brand Goes Bankrupt

SmileDirectClub's sudden bankruptcy and Byte's suspension of U.S. operations left thousands of patients in an alarming position: mid-treatment, with aligners that stopped working, and monthly payments still being deducted by third-party financing companies.

This is what's sometimes called the "orphaned aligner" problem, and it's more common than the DTC industry ever advertised.

Here's the financial reality: when you financed through a company like Healthcare Finance Direct, you signed a contract with a lender — not the aligner brand. That lender has no obligation to cancel your payments because the brand dissolved. Disputing those charges requires formal written communication with the lender, documentation of the service disruption, and in some cases, a complaint filed through your state attorney general or the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

On the clinical side, transitioning an incomplete DTC case to a local Invisalign provider is possible, but it requires a full diagnostic workup — X-rays, scans, and a clinical exam. The American Dental Association has been explicit about the risks: moving teeth without complete knowledge of a patient's oral condition can cause bone loss, gum disease, bite problems, and permanent damage. A local provider needs to assess what the DTC treatment actually did before continuing.

The good news: Invisalign's doctor-directed model means your provider — not a distant corporation — owns your case. If a practice closes, your records transfer. Corporate insolvency doesn't strand you.

The Biomechanics of Why "Mild Cases Only" Isn't Just Marketing Language

Most comparison articles say Invisalign handles "complex cases" while Byte handles "mild cases" without explaining the biology behind that distinction. That vagueness leaves patients with moderate crowding wondering if they can safely save money by going at-home. They usually cannot.

Here's why. Crowded teeth need space to move into alignment. That space has to come from somewhere. There are two legitimate ways to create it: interproximal reduction (IPR) and, when necessary, tooth extraction. Cleveland Clinic explains that IPR involves removing small amounts of enamel between teeth — typically no more than half a millimeter per tooth — to create the room needed for proper alignment. A 2022 study found that 71% of Invisalign patients needed IPR as part of their treatment.

DTC brands cannot perform IPR. No one is physically present to do it.

Without IPR, at-home aligners resolve crowding the only way they mechanically can: by pushing teeth outward, a phenomenon called flaring. Flared teeth look straighter, but their roots are being pushed toward — or beyond — the boundary of the supporting bone. The result can be irreversible gum recession and, in serious cases, tooth mobility.

The second tool DTC brands lack is SmartForce Attachments — small tooth-colored grips bonded to teeth that allow aligners to rotate teeth and move them vertically (intrusion and extrusion). Without attachments, aligners can only tip teeth. Tipping is fine for very minor spacing. It's insufficient for anything more.

Healthline's overview of Invisalign effectiveness notes that complexity of orthodontic issues directly affects how well aligners perform — and that limitation is mechanical, not just a matter of treatment time.

As a Healthline review of removable braces notes, DTC companies rely on home impressions taken by the patient rather than a trained dental technician, which means bite issues and bone conditions can be missed entirely before treatment even begins.

So Is Byte Just as Good as Invisalign?

For the right patient — someone with genuinely minor spacing and no bite issues — Byte and similar at-home products can produce acceptable cosmetic results. A Healthline comparison of invisible braces positions Byte as a strong option for quick treatment timelines in appropriate candidates.

But "appropriate candidate" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. The problem is that most people don't know whether they're appropriate candidates until a licensed clinician evaluates them in person. Selecting a DTC aligner based on a home impression and a few photos means skipping the diagnostic step that determines whether at-home treatment is even safe.

Invisalign isn't inherently better because of brand prestige. It's better-supported because every case is directed by a licensed provider who can perform IPR, place attachments, monitor bone and gum health, and adjust the plan if teeth aren't tracking correctly. Healthline's Invisalign cost overview notes that orthodontic treatment — even when cosmetically motivated — protects against decay and periodontal disease by making teeth easier to clean. Patients who've experienced decay during or after aligner treatment may also need cavity fillings to restore affected teeth before or after completing their orthodontic plan.

At Nu Dentistry Tanglewood, the question we encourage patients to ask isn't "which brand is cheaper?" It's "which approach gives me results that hold up in ten years?" For patients also interested in enhancing their smile beyond alignment, aesthetic dentistry options can complement Invisalign treatment for a complete smile transformation.

We have been looking for a family dentist for a long time. Not too long ago we met Dr. Ali. Not only was he professional, kind, and gentle, but he always finds a way to fit us in when we need an appointment. He’s also pretty funny! I appreciate that he takes the time to explain what he’s doing, before he does it. That really puts me at ease.
